SardisSardis - Sardis was the ancient capital of King Croesus of Lydia.  Next to nothing is known about the city before his time.  He was one of the wealthiest men of the ancient world, and the inventor of money.  Croesus built his kingdom into a powerful empire, but lived at the time as Cyrus the Great of Persia.  His empire was even more powerful, and when the two went to war, Cyrus defeated Croesus.  From that point, Sardis was incorporated into the Persian Empire and became seat of Persia's western most province of Asia Minor.  The Royal Road ran from Persepolis to Sardis.
