AntiochAntioch - The capital of the Seleucid Empire located on the Orontes River.  Both the empire and the city were founded by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander's generals who survived the Diadochi (Successor Wars).  Seleucus wanted a capital to rival that of Alexandria in Egypt.  In fact, he founded four cities which became known as the Sryian Tetrapolis.  But Antioch was the most magnificent.  It became a trade city and thrived as a stop along the Silk Road.  But war and natural disasters reduced it to a backwater town in the Middle Ages.  It became a key city during the initial spread of Christianity.
