JerusalemJerusalem - The capital of ancient Israel and site of Solomon's Temple.  Even before Israel was established, Jerusalem had been a Canaanite city named Salem.  When David became king, he captured Jerusalem and made it Israel's capital.  For this reason, it is referred to as the "City of David".  When David's son, Solomon, became king, he built the Temple of the Lord.  It stood for over 400 years until destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. under King Nebuchadnezzar.  The temple was rebuilt, and destroyed again by the Romans in 70 A.D..
